yoga & juice detox weekend

2 October 2016

I think autumn is really coming… Want to give yourself a real treat and start the new season fresh, clean and full of power? I have prepared a 3-day yoga and juice detox weekend. Join me from Friday 7 till Sunday 9 October at the LiveYoga studio in Amsterdam.

For 3 days you will only give your body what it needs with juices that are highly concentrated with nutrients. Your digestive system gets the change to rest and all your energy can focus on cleansing and restoring the body. Yoga is the best support you can give your body to fullfill this task. With the help of specific asanas and pranayama you stimulate the organs that execute the detoxing process and improve their functioning.

Every class will consist of a 2 hour yoga class, tutorials on detoxing and a change to ask questions and share experiences. With every class you will receive your freshly pressed juices for the day (4 juices and a shot of power juice). If you don’t want to fast, you can choose to have the juices in addition to regular food. Of course I can advise you on a nutricious detoxing meal plan.

For this unique program I have teamed up with Marjolein from De Sapbar. She will squeeze all the life and love out of the fresh vegetables and fruits into wholesome rich power juices. The juices and yoga are adapted to complement each other into an optimum detox. Join me for this weekend and get in touch with your body, learn to listen to its signs and experience the wholesome effect of yoga and pranayama. You can sign up on the LiveYoga site.

5 days of portuguese paradise

20 April 2016

As you can see we have had a wonderful time in Portugal! It was the first time for Mieke and myself to organise a retreat at Buddha Retreats and I have to say that it could not have been better. The weather, the food, the company of beautiful people, the green hills and birds singing, the pool and of course Lisbon. Five days of taking the best care of yourself with wholesome food and yoga sessions to cleanse and nourish the body.

The estate is simply stunning. You could not tell it’s at the edge of a village as once inside the big gate, you are overlooking nothing but green hills. From the gate a partly with plants and flowers roofed path will take you to the main house. It used to be a wine property and the round shapes of the architecture, white plaster and natural stone stairs immediately give you that feel of the mediterranean good life.  Once you’ve arrived you know you are going to chill big time. On our first day we did not do much but let the sun kiss our pale skin by the pool, preparing ourselves for the first yoga session.

The program we designed focused on a different organ every day with yoga sessions and food to support that system. With an energising yoga practice in the morning and a restorative one in the evening you could really tell the effect of the focused approach. Surely we worked on the whole body, but the detoxifying system of your body benefits from giving special attention to those organs. And to even increase that effect we carefully designed a menu selecting each ingredient on their properties to support the bodily functions and help the body restore balance. It was a feast seeing everything fall into place. We spend so many hours preparing in the past few months, but when I saw the beautiful dishes being served, the wholesome effect of the yoga and happy people, I realized this is what I want to do all the time.

We planned the meals and yoga sessions in a way we had the whole afternoon to ourselves. Being situated less than half an hour away from the coast, it was ideal to go for a surf lesson or hang around in one of the beach bars. The ocean can be quite rough so I left the surfing to my man. The rest of us was happy to spend the day sheltered from the wind in a sunny spot on the terrace watching surf dudes doing their business. The coast is beautiful, clean, rough and away from mass tourism. One thing that you notice right away is how friendly people are. I’m going to take an example to the Portugese and smile for no reason! It is so warming and welcoming and instantly lifts your mood to happy levels.

workshop balancing

22 Februari 2016

Very exciting things happening here! I’m going to serve a delicious nutritious lunch at the yoga workshop of my own teacher Berber Schönholzer. Exciting as I always claim to be a useless cook. (Now how am I going to make this sound appealing again?) No seriously, I usually totally mess up a dish the first time I make it and I can only cook serially, meaning I can’t do two things at the same time. So catering was never considered to be an optional career move. But I have so many ideas for serving something else than the usual suspects for lunch and I would just love to share some of the addicting good dishes that I have been cooking up for myself and willing victims around. So evidently the only answer could be yes of course I am going to prepare lunch for the whole group of participants to the workshop. I will just start chopping right now.

The workshop is about balancing in which Berber will take you through different poses balancing on one leg or the arms. Balancing is so much fun to do and so rewarding when you get to that point where you are actually on two arms bearing the rest of your body. Seems impossible maybe, but Berber is a star in breaking things down into something easy and doable for everybody. The other thing I like about balancing is that you really need to shut yourself off from everything around you that might disturb you in order to find your inner tranquillity. It’s a good check to see how much you are ‘here and now’ and it connects the physical state of balance to the mental. If you are balanced you cannot be knocked over easily. Sometimes it’s as simple as that and I just love how the poses work on so many levels.

I could not be happier with this balancing theme for lunch for it is everything I want my food to be! I believe that everybody has a natural state of balance on an energetic level that enables you to live your life to its full potential. Food is an excellent way of balancing back to that equilibrium and I can’t wait to show you how. The other balancing task I see is to create a lunch that is nutritious and satisfying after a physical challenging morning program, yet light and easy digestible. We want you to be gracefully conquering gravity, not napping in a corner. And don’t get me started on combining different foods and spices with all of their own nutrients, tastes and textures. I see crunchy greens, juicy fruits, rich roots… warming spices and cooling herbs… salt, sweet, sour and devilish sharp! What a feast to balance all of that out.

You can join us on Saturday 5 March 10:45-16:45 at Iyengar Yoga Zeeburg (check the site for more info and online subscription). Love to see you there!
